Water scarcity in Maharashtra state and Hi-Tech solutions – Part 1

State Maharashtra is battling with worst drought situation in the recent days. Where every drop of water has become precious. State includes several villages in various districts which are affected badly. This includes districts

In-fact in Jalna district, the grave water scarcity has even compelled villagers to cancel marriages. The situation in Nagpur region is alarming in view of the drastic reduction in water levels in important dams.

In year 2015 the water crisis in Maharashtra affected nearly 90 lacks farmers, equal to almost the entire population of Sweden.

According to one of the report published by Maharashtra state Government’s Water Resources Department

The percentage of drought prone area in the state is 52 % and 39% of the soils are light.

This is just one side of the problem. As the state is rapid growing with GDP ≅12% (2017-18 est.), demand for water is also increasing in urban areas, big cities in state like Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Nashik, Ahmednagar.

What state administration is doing ?

State administration is taking steps to tackle this problem in two ways. First is for short-term by pressing in action services like sending more number of water tankers, getting water from neighboring districts. And another is long-term like Jalyukt Shivar Abhiyaan project in a bid to make Maharashtra a drought-free state by 2019. The project involves deepening and widening of streams, construction of cement and earthen stop dams, work on nullahs and digging of farm ponds. This will possibly increase ground water levels in regions.

Well I think the steps government is taking are good but not enough. The drought full situation are not new to the planet. We as human race have faced such situations several times and learned something new every time. We have developed several technologies which are capable of helping us in such situations.

In this series of posts I am going to discuss some hi-tech and modern ways the world is using to tackle drought, drinking water crisis related problems. In subsequent posts we are going to see one by one what all solutions we have now. In general these technologies or solutions can be broadly classified as

  1. Water Desalination.
  2. Extracting water from the atmosphere.
  3. Increasing ground water levels.
  4. Water reclamation.
  5. Saving rain water/ Rain water harvesting.
  6. Preserving natural water resources for long-term use.
  7. Reducing use of water for farming, industrial processes and household uses.
  8. Educating people to avoid excessive use of water.

In next post we are going to see in detail about technologies/solutions available for Water desalination.
